What is the eSIM that the iPhone 14 has, how it works and how it can be contracted with Telcel, AT&T and Movistar in Mexico

Yesterday the new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max were presented with all their news. Apple dropped all the information at the event held where they also showed the new Apple Watch and Airpods Pro 2. Xataka Mexico We already have all the coverage so you know the differences between iPhone 13 and 14, the costs of the new iPhone, and even comparisons with other smartphones.

One of the features with more emphasis in the presentation of the new iPhone was the use of the eSIM which will now play a leading role in the United States, since the new iPhone 14 will not have a physical SIM card slot. In Mexico we will still have the possibility to choose between both options, however, it is likely that in the near future the only option will be to use eSIM.

If you still don’t know the eSIM, here we tell you what it is, how it works, and how you can acquire one in Mexico.

What is an eSIM and how does it work?

An eSIM, or also called a virtual SIM, is the evolution of the traditional SIM card. Its name is due to “embedded Sim” which means integrated Sim and that, as its name suggests, is integrated into the hardware of a mobile phone, a tablet or a smart watch. This eliminates the need to physically insert a SIM card or change it for a new one when we change operators.

As it is an integrated element within the smartphone itself, it saves space as it is smaller than a nano SIM and allows linking up to 20 different phone lineseach with its own profile so that you can use them as you see fit, since you can configure which line to call and which to use data.

In fact the use of the eSIM is very similar to that of a traditional SIM with the difference that you can access different lines without physically purchasing a SIM card and that to activate them you just need to scan a QR code provided by the operator.

How to get an eSIM with Telcel, Movistar and AT&T in Mexico?

In our country there are only three operators that offer cellular lines and plans: Telcel, Movistar and AT&T

For Telcel we must visit a point of the nearest authorized center where the eSIM is activated, it should be clarified that this option can only be used with a Unlimited Max Plan.

For AT&T we can visit an authorized center or we can contract a plan from the same web page, where the QR code necessary to activate the eSIM will arrive by mail. This option is available with a AT&T Simple Plan and also by prepayment, however, you will have to ask your authorized center if they have it available in this last option.

For Movistar in the same way we must go to the nearest authorized center, unlike Telcel or AT&T here You can choose to use your eSIM both in plan and prepaid. They will give us a card with a QR code that by scanning it you can activate your line with eSIM.

Finally, as data, the OMV Dialo MX also offers an eSIM service, with them all contracts must be via WhatsApp, and like Movistar the modality is via prepaid, with the possibility of direct debit payment.
