The matches between Colombia and Mexico at Chase Field in Phoenix and between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela at a loan depot park in Miami will headline the opening day of the first-round American phase of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, according to the schedule announced on Thursday by the organizers.
The fifth edition of the event organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the Major Leagues of the United States (MLB), mainly, is scheduled to be held from March 8 to 21.
On this occasion, teams from 20 countries will participate, divided into four groups. Groups A and B will play at the Intercontinental Stadium in Taichung, Taiwan, and the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, respectively, from March 8 to 13, while groups C and D will play at the stadiums of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami MLB Marlins, March 11-15.
The activity of Group C will begin on Saturday the 11th with the clashes between Colombia and Mexico and the United States against a country yet to be defined in qualifying rounds. Canada, the fifth member of the division, will debut the following day against the unknown qualifier.
The pitched battle that is expected in sector D, also called “Group of Death”, in Miami, will open with the match between Puerto Rico and a selection to be defined and will close with the stellar duel between Dominicans and Venezuelans.
The classic between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, the two great rivals in Caribbean baseball, will take place on the last date of the group, which will also include Israel.
The top two teams from Groups C and D will meet in the second round in Miami.
