FAENZA, Italy (AP) — AlphaTauri has extended Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda’s contract to stay with the team next year.
Tsunoda is in his second year in Formula One with AlphaTauri, and his best result this season was a seventh place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in April.
The 22-year-old Japanese is 14th among the 20 drivers participating in the championship, with a total of 11 points. His best career result was fourth place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which closed last season in December.
“After moving to Italy last year, to be closer to the factory, I really feel part of the team and I’m happy to be able to continue racing with them in 2023,” Tsonoda said on Thursday.
“Our season isn’t over yet and we’re still fighting hard… so I’m fully focused on finishing it as well as possible.”
Frenchman Pierre Gasly, Tsunoda’s partner, sounds to go to Alpine as a replacement for Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard will move to Aston Martin next season following Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from F1.
