The 1980s were a great time for horror movies. Different filmmakers presented their creations and left the public terrified. One of those exponents was David Cronenberg. In 1981, the person in charge of the remake of The Fly, released a story that mixes terror with science fiction, scanners.

This movie tells the story of a group of people with telepathic and telekinetic powers called Scanners, who live on the outskirts of society. Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside) has the crazy idea of creating a master race, for this he is persecuted by ConSec, a weapons and security company. To stop Revok, this company recruits Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) to stop him.

Scanners had a modest budget of $3.5 million and grossed over $14 million, not to mention that when it was released on VHS it generated even more profit. the explosion of the scientist’s brain during the conference with Revok.

For a long time there have been attempts to bring history back. Dimension Films sought to make a new film in 2011, but not only did it fail, it never got Cronenberg’s blessing. Six years later Media Res Studios began preparations for the new adaptation of scanners and now it takes on new strength thanks to HBO. According to Deadline, the story will have a remake but not as a movie, but as a series, which will be exclusive to HBO.

According to the site, the story will be set in the cronenberg universe and tells how two women scanners, who live on the fringes of society, must learn to work together to overthrow a conspiracy on them.

Yann Demange, who is responsible for Lovecraft Country, will be in charge of the series and will have the writer of Black Mirror, William Bridges, who will serve as writer of the script and showrunner.

The good news is that the Scanners series will have David Cronenberg closely, as he will serve as executive producer.
