King Viserys is dead, Aegon II has been crowned, and now everyone on Dragonstone knows it. As expected, Rhaenyra was furious at the news and it forced her to go into premature labor, but was that the real cause of her baby’s deformity?
It finally happened! After Rhaenys (Eve Best)’s triumphant entry into the Great Sept of Baelor, “The queen who never was” mounted Meleys and arrived at Dragonstone to report to Rhaenyra (Emma D’arcy) about the usurpation of the Iron Throne. The coronation of Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) was an attack against his kingdom and although Rhaenys was able to stop him with a Dracarys, the war had already begun since The Seven Kingdoms were divided between black and green.
In episode nine, King Vyceris I (Paddy Considine) spoke Aegon’s prophecy on his deathbed. However, Alicent (Olivia Cooke) took advantage of the confusion to proclaim her eldest son as heir to the throne along with his wife and sister Helaena (Phia Saban). While Aegon II wore a black crownthe legitimate heiress to the throne was in Rocadragón in a complicated process of childbirth.
Although the greens tried to keep the news secret, Rhaenys took it upon herself to reveal to her former daughter-in-law the dirty betrayal that was taking place in King’s Landing.. As expected, the coronation of his half-brother made Rhaenyra furious, who began to have strong contractions. Everything indicated one thing: the baby was about to be born.
Almost as it happened with her mother, Aemma (Sian Brooke), the birth was complicated and after much blood loss and painful screams, the young queen desperately grabbed the baby’s head until she finally managed to expel him, but no crying was heard, the infant’s body lay on the ground covered in blood. Daemon’s new successor (matt smith) had been born dead. The women who accompanied Rhaenyra burst into tears and looked frightened at the little being, who had a terrifying appearance due to malformations.
For many, this was a consequence of all the emotions she felt, forcing her to have a premature birth, but did that have to do with the child’s malformations? Previously, Rhaenyra was accused of having bastard children, but unlike Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), Jacaerys (Harry Collet), and Joffrey Velaryon, his new son would maintain the Targaryen blood due to the genes of his father Daemon, with whom he already had two sons: Aegon III and Vyseris.
But what is not said in the series is that the new member was a girl: Visenya. According to George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood on which House of the Dragon was based, the leader of the blacks was so furious that she prayed to the gods to curse all the traitors, including the baby she was carrying, to whom she shouted “Monster, monster, come out now!”. According to the book’s description, the little girl was born “dead, misshapen, and deformed, with a hollow in her chest where the heart should be, and a short, thick, scaly tail”; almost like a dragon.
If you pay attention to the scene you will see that the delivery alternates with the images of Vermax, who is also roaring. With this we can conclude that Rhaenyra was the cause of her daughter’s death and it was she who cursed her, hence she was born deformed. Even so, he swears revenge: “She was my only daughter and they have killed her. They have stolen my crown and they have murdered my daughter and they must pay for it.” Unfortunately we will have to wait a bit to find out what will happen with the Dance of the Dragons. What did you think of the season finale?
